Making Pizza Yourself: Kitchen Helpers for Dough, Sauce & Toppings
At Butch, you'll find everything you need for preparing, cooking, and serving pizza. The tools and cookware presented here are also suitable for preparing similar recipes like tarte flambée, flatbread, focaccia, galettes, and more.
We at Butch love Italian cuisine, and we love pizza! Naturally homemade. Our favorites are classics like Pizza Napoletana and Pizza Margherita, and they taste just like from our favorite Italian restaurant. Well, almost. But with the right recipes and the right tools, you can actually get close to the Italian original.
The three main ingredients for pizza are: dough, tomatoes or tomato sauce, and cheese. With these, you can already create a Neapolitan-style pizza. Add basil, and it becomes a Pizza Margherita. Its history dates back to the 19th century when a pizza maker in Naples supposedly created this pizza for the wife of King Umberto I. Mozzarella cheese (white), tomatoes (red), and basil (green) - a topping in the national colors of Italy! Over time, this pizza variant has probably become the most well-known pizza of all. The key to the original taste is the right ingredients. San Marzano tomatoes are used, and the traditional mozzarella is not buffalo mozzarella but a Fior di Latte made from cow's milk. However, we at Butch believe that whatever tastes good is allowed. And taste is a very personal, individual matter.
The Pizza Dough
Let's start with the dough. The classic dough for a pizza is a simple yeast dough. The key to success is the quality of the ingredients and a dough recipe that suits your personal taste. Some like the dough thin and crispy, while others prefer the American version, which is thicker and fluffier. Some like the pizza round, as it is served in pizzerias, while others prefer the rectangular baking sheet version, often used as a family pizza or party pizza. We have put together a nice selection of kitchen helpers for you on the topic of dough: flour sieves and bowls for preparing the dough, baking spatulas and dough scrapers, a rolling pin for rolling out the pizza dough, and silicone work mats.
The Tomato Sauce
For cooking the tomato sauce, Butch offers almost every pot size in various materials, along with cutting boards, mezzalunas, stirring spoons, and much more. To keep this section from becoming too cluttered: If you need such basics, you can find them using the search field with the magnifying glass at the top of the header. Just enter the term, and all results will be displayed. A real little Butch darling is the pizza ladle from de Buyer. With it, the tomato sauce can be spread on the dough and – here's the trick – thanks to its flat bottom, it can also be spread thinly directly.
The Topping
When it comes to toppings, your imagination knows no bounds. There are countless variations. Besides the Pizza Margherita with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, one of the first pizzas we enjoyed here at the Italian restaurant was a pizza with salami, ham, and mushrooms. A version that is associated with travel memories and tastes like a vacation by the sea is the Pizza Frutti di Mare, topped with seafood. A bit more experimental than the traditional recipes are exotics like Pizza Hawaii with pineapple or low-carb pizza with cauliflower. Our motto is: whatever tastes good is allowed.
