Peugeot Coffee Grinders
»In today's world, grinding coffee by hand? Is it even worth the effort?«, asked a visitor in our store when looking at the Peugeot coffee grinders.
Of course, the effort is worth it, we at Butch believe. And there are several reasons for that.
The taste of your coffee depends on various factors:
Firstly, there is the coffee itself: the growing region, coffee variety, and roasting all play a significant role in the taste. Then there is the preparation: a filter coffee brewed in a ceramic filter by hand into a coffee pot tastes different than a coffee from a French press. The coffee is very mild and gentle when prepared using the gentle cold-brew method. The water used also has a significant impact on the result: hard water with high levels of calcium negatively affects the quality of the coffee.
And - last but not least - the correct grind is very important. Here, it is essential to adjust the grind of your coffee beans to the respective preparation method. In a French press, a coarse grind is used since the coffee powder remains in the water for a longer time. If the coffee powder were too fine, tannins and bitter substances would be extracted, which are not desirable. On the other hand, coffee that is too coarsely ground in a ceramic filter would cause the brewing water to flow through too quickly - the coffee would not only be thin but also have little aroma.
When buying pre-ground coffee, you cannot influence the grind. That is why we at Butch exclusively prefer whole beans and grind them ourselves.
Freshly ground coffee tastes best. Grinding not only crushes the coffee beans (increasing the surface area for later contact with water), but the grinding process also breaks down the cell structure of the coffee bean. This releases the numerous aroma compounds that are then extracted by the water during brewing. Coffee has more aromas than wine! Researchers have discovered about 800 different aromas in coffee so far. However, when ground, coffee loses more than half of its aroma after just 15 minutes. Therefore, it is best to grind fresh just before preparation. And: best with a Peugeot coffee grinder.
Peugeot Hand Coffee Grinders
Since 1840, coffee grinders have been a core competency of Peugeot. The company's long experience and know-how are reflected in the hand coffee grinder. In its form, it resembles the coffee grinder model of our grandmothers: The classic Peugeot grinder is made of high-quality beech wood, has a typical square shape, a hand crank, and a small drawer for collecting the ground coffee. The grinding degree (from coarse to very fine) can be selected via a wheel under the crank. The heart of Peugeot's hand coffee grinder is the grinding mechanism. The coffee beans are gently ground and not, as is often the case with cheap electric appliances, brutally chopped.
The manufacturer Peugeot grants a 25-year warranty for the exclusive, patented grinding mechanism for Germany. (Here's the Peugeot warranty statement.)
The grinding result consistently corresponds to the pre-set grinding degree. Which grinding degree is suitable for which preparation method - we have recommendations that you can use as a guide: For espresso from espresso machines, use a very fine grinding degree, for the one from the good "old" stove-top pot, use a fine grinding degree. For hand-filtered coffee, we prefer a medium grinding degree. In our opinion, the best way to prepare French press coffee is with a coarse to very coarse grinding degree.
We at Butch advise you: Just try it out! No coffee variety is exactly the same, each has an individual taste, and so on. With a little experimenting, you will become a hobby barista in no time with just a few turns of the hand crank...
