Peugeot Coffee Grinders
»Grinding coffee by hand in today's world? Is it even worth the effort?«,
a visitor asked us in our store when looking at the Peugeot coffee grinders.
Of course, it's worth the effort, we at Butch believe. And there are several reasons for this.
The taste of your coffee depends on various factors:
First, there is the coffee itself: The growing region, coffee variety, and roasting play a significant role in the taste. Then comes the preparation: A filter coffee, brewed by hand with a ceramic filter in the traditional way, tastes different from coffee from a French Press. Coffee prepared using the gentle cold-brew method is very mild and smooth. The water used also has a significant impact on the result: Hard water (high in calcium) negatively affects coffee quality.
And – last but not least – the right grind size is very important. The rule here is: Adjust the grind size of your coffee beans to the respective preparation method. In a French Press (the official name is press pot), a coarse grind is used because the coffee grounds remain in the water longer. If the coffee grounds were too fine, tannins and bitter substances would be released, which you don't want. On the other hand, coffee ground too coarsely in a ceramic filter would cause the brewing water to flow through too quickly – the coffee would not only be thin but also have little aroma.
When buying pre-ground coffee, you can no longer influence the grind size. That's why we at Butch prefer whole beans and grind them ourselves.
Freshly ground coffee tastes best. The grinding not only reduces the size of the coffee beans (increasing the surface area for later contact with water) but also breaks the cell structure of the coffee bean. This releases the numerous aromatic compounds, which are then extracted by the water during brewing. Coffee has more aromas than wine! Researchers have discovered about 800 different aromas in coffee so far. However, once coffee is ground, it loses more than half of its aroma after just 15 minutes. Therefore, the rule is: Always grind fresh just before preparation. And: It's best to grind with a Peugeot coffee grinder.
Peugeot Hand Coffee Mills
Since 1840, coffee mills have been a core competency of Peugeot. The company's long experience and know-how are reflected in the hand coffee mill. In its form, it resembles the coffee mill model of our grandmothers: The classic Peugeot mill is made of high-quality beech wood, has a typically square shape, a hand crank, and a small drawer to collect the ground coffee. The grind setting (from coarse to very fine) can be selected via a wheel under the crank. The heart of the Peugeot hand coffee mill is the grinder. The coffee beans are gently ground and not - as often with cheap electric devices - brutally chopped.
The exclusive, patented grinder comes with a 25-year warranty from the manufacturer Peugeot for Germany. (Here is the Peugeot warranty statement.)
The grinding result consistently corresponds to the preset grind. Which grind suits which preparation method - we have recommendations that you can use as a guide: For espresso from espresso machines, use a very fine grind, for the good "old" stovetop pot, a fine grind. For hand-filtered coffee, we prefer a medium grind. In our opinion, preparation in the French Press works best with a coarse to very coarse grind.
We at Butch advise you: Just give it a try! No coffee variety is exactly like the other, everyone has an individual taste, and so on. With a little experimenting, you'll become a hobby barista in no time...
