Noyer

Noyer

Noyer is a young label from Denmark that produces high-quality furniture, home and kitchen accessories made from walnut wood. Noyer products combine high functionality with extravagant design. All items are lovingly handmade in a small workshop in Valby near Copenhagen. You can see that the objects are created with a lot of skill by hand on the saw, and not designed on a computer using a CAD program. All Noyer products are completely made in Denmark - from the creative idea to production and finishing. The workshop floor is covered in sawdust, it smells warm of wood and the team of carpenters, including founder Janus Larsen, works with a lot of imagination and passion.

In addition to wooden furniture, the product portfolio also includes magnetic strips for knife storage and cutting boards. The characteristic design of Noyer creations immediately catches the eye and is the typical trademark of the still young company: an extraordinary design of the pieces together with the extravagant grain of the walnut wood creates the unmistakable Noyer design. This creates small works of art for your kitchen that are as individual as you are. No piece is the same in detail, each one is unique. Of course, the products in a series are similar in essential characteristics such as appearance, size and measurement, so you can be sure that knife strips and cutting boards will be delivered in the desired length and width and have a comparable look to the items in the shop.

Why Walnut Wood?

The wood of the walnut tree is what gives the brand its name: "Noyer" is French and translates to walnut. Janus Larsen is often asked "Why walnut wood?" For him, there are several reasons why he and his team prefer to work with walnut wood:

• Walnut wood is characterized by high durability and dimensional stability. Furniture and utensils made of walnut retain their shape over a long period of time. That's why this type of wood has been used for centuries to make gun stocks, among other things.

• Walnut wood has a deep, dark color and a lively grain, due to the many branches. This appearance gives the products made from it an exclusive and noble look. Moreover, walnut can be polished extremely smoothly. So smooth that, according to Larsen, it feels almost like porcelain. This smooth texture creates a fascinating contrast with the warm wood look.

• Over the years, walnut wood develops a wonderful patina. Almost every wood gradually patinates, but with walnut, the naturally beautiful color becomes even more lively and deeper over time.

• The walnut wood used at Noyer comes from sustainable agriculture in the USA.

Why Knife Holders?

The most commonly used tool in the kitchen by hobby and professional chefs is the knife. Therefore, it makes sense to have kitchen knives safely and within reach. High-quality knives should never be placed in a drawer with other cutlery. This damages the blades and poses a risk of injury. There are various ways to store knives in the kitchen for easy access. A functional and attractive method is to present the knives hanging freely on a magnetic strip from Noyer.

Knife Holder

The knife strips from Noyer don't look like mere utensils on the wall, they look more like small works of art - true design objects. Each knife strip is handmade from walnut wood and is unique due to the individual grain and small deviations in the craftsmanship. Typical for Noyer are the edges running at a 45-degree angle and standing perpendicular to each other. Together with the concealed mounting, this design feature gives the strips mounted on the wall a certain weightlessness and makes the wood "float". A steel rail is attached to the wall with just two screws. The strong magnets integrated in the wooden strip fix the strip to the rail. Done! This type of "mounting" creates a certain distance from the knife holder to the wall, which has both stylish and practical reasons: This way, the handle of the knife can be easily and safely gripped when removing it.

The strong neodymium magnets in the knife strips ensure a secure hold for the kitchen knives. The number of magnets used keeps the attached knives firmly in the desired position and also avoids unsightly "dangling". This not only serves safety - true aesthetes also value their knives hanging straight or parallel to each other.

At Noyer, the knife holders are not finally painted, but polished smooth and treated with cold-pressed organic linseed oil. Linseed oil preserves the natural beauty of the wood, preserves and cares for it. It goes without saying that knives should not be hung on the knife strip in a damp state. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that storing them in a damp state would not be good for your knives or the wood …

The Noyer logo is located on the back of the knife strips. The Danish wood artists have chosen this placement because, contrary to the logomania trend, they do not want to brand their products on the front. Butch likes that.

The knife holders are packaged in specially made felt covers to protect the precious wood during transport and storage.

Cutting Boards

Noyer cutting boards come in different sizes and can be used as carving boards (with juice groove), serving boards, and work boards. All cutting boards are handmade from high-quality walnut wood at Noyer. Each piece has a unique appearance and is therefore one of a kind. No two items are exactly alike. Therefore, pictures in the shop only give an impression of what the product will look like.

The edges are cut at 45-degree angles to each other, giving the boards their characteristic Noyer appearance, together with the asymmetrical shape. This design feature also has a practical effect: when the board is flat on the table, there are always edge corners that are easy to grip. This is particularly advantageous for large, heavy boards.

The small cutting boards are also designed according to the same principle and are available in a set of two. With their slanted edges and asymmetrical contour, they are an eye-catcher on any table. They are mainly used as classic breakfast boards, sandwich or snack boards. These small boards have something nostalgic about them, yet they look really chic in combination with porcelain and ceramics due to their extraordinary, noble appearance. A great idea is also to use several of them as small serving boards and distribute them on the table. Appetizers or snacks arranged in this way invite everyone to try them. Like all Noyer wooden boards, the eating boards are handmade from high-quality walnut wood. Each piece is therefore slightly different from the others, and these two cutting boards delivered in a set are basically the same, but of course not identical.

The cutting boards at Noyer are treated with organic linseed oil, which protects and preserves the wood in a completely natural way. However, since the boards are working tools - even if they look like decorative objects - cut marks will eventually be visible on the surface. To be able to use the board as a serving board without any visible marks, we have a tip for you: use one side as a cutting board and the other as a serving board, then no knife marks will interfere when you arrange finger food, cheese, or salmon on the wood. This trick also works with the cutting board with a juice groove. The juice groove ensures that meat and vegetable juice stays on the board while working. This detail is not needed for serving, and the cutting board can be turned over to the smooth backside without a juice groove.

Wooden boards from the Noyer brand are easy to clean and maintain. Rinse the board under running water with a non-abrasive sponge and a mild dish soap solution, dry it thoroughly and let it dry completely on the small wooden stand that comes with the board. The stand - also made of American walnut wood - gives the board a stable base while drying, and also serves as an attention-grabbing presentation of the attractive accessory in your kitchen.

If the cutting board requires a more thorough cleaning, you can safely wash it with boiling water, dry it and put it back on the stand. With frequent use, the wood will lose some of its shine over time. This can be refreshed with a little linseed oil or special wood care oil, and the board will look almost new afterwards. Almost, because it is quite normal and desired for a product made of a natural material like wood to age and develop a beautiful patina. We at Butch believe that kitchen utensils made of wood become more beautiful over time, provided of course that the quality is right. Through patination, they tell many stories about cooking and enjoying, and that is something you can gladly see.

But (yes, there is a small "but" at this point): Every type of wood, no matter how beautiful, is a natural product and therefore needs a little care and attention on a regular basis. In our magazine you will find a competent guide article on this: Care instructions for wooden cutting boards

The cutting boards from Noyer are packaged in a felt cover that protects the wood and can also be reused in a variety of ways, as a cover for tablets, books, pictures, etc.

As a quintessence, here is a statement from the guys at Noyer: "Our work is based on five fundamental principles: a product must be functional. It must be durable. It must be beautiful. It must be unique. And, in addition to precise and exact execution, it must also have something playful." And these principles are 1:1 in line with the philosophy of Butch.
