Nesmuk

Nesmuk Knives

The name Nesmuk stands for a small, fine knife manufacturer from Solingen, Germany's knife capital. The company was founded in 2006 by Lars Scheidler, and the brand with the bat was initially considered a secret tip and today Nesmuk is one of the premium manufacturers in the field of cutting tools. Scheidler's intention to produce "the sharpest, most noble and durable knives" has become the philosophy of the brand. Nesmuk knives are highly appreciated - by knife enthusiasts all over the world and by international top chefs, because in star gastronomy, the best tools are important when it comes to processing high-quality food.

The exceptionally high quality of Nesmuk knives is a result of craftsmanship, innovative technology, the best materials, and last but not least, great passion and personal commitment. Stephan Borchert, who now leads the company, relies on traditional, traditional manufacturing techniques, a high degree of manual labor and craftsmanship, combined with innovative high-tech methods. The Nesmuk knife forge only uses the best steel grades and unusual, exquisite handle materials. Nesmuk master blacksmith Markus Pattschull has the skill to produce blades made of Damascus steel with particularly elaborate Damascus patterns. The number of individual steel layers can be several hundred or even several thousand layers.

„The knife is one of the oldest tools in human history. If you want to change this cultural symbol, the challenge is to rethink ergonomics, technology, and tradition. At Nesmuk, craftsmanship and modern technology combine to create perfect design: a knife as a functional product on the border between craftsmanship and art.” (Quote from the Nesmuk brand)

Nesmuk | Knives and Brand

The fascination that emanates from a Nesmuk knife is difficult to describe in words alone. And how does one explain the admittedly proud price? What can be so special about a knife that you spend 500 euros on it? And that's just the beginning. If you delve deeper into the products of this brand, you will also find examples that cost around 5,000 euros. A good knife should cut precisely, fit comfortably in the hand, and last a long time. At the beginning of our love affair with Nesmuk, we wondered: What is special about knives from the forge with the bat? Today we know. Here is an explanation...

Nesmuk | Form and Function

The design of the knives and accessories is developed in-house. This ensures that the high standards of both functionality and aesthetics are maintained. New products are developed and optimized according to their purpose.
An example of this is the Nesmuk steak knives: Cutting meat on porcelain plates usually leads to a quick loss of sharpness, as the ceramic surface is harder than the blade steel. The Nesmuk designers have given the steak knife a straight blade geometry, which allows the user to guide the knife over the plate without damaging the edge. Only the tip of the blade has contact with the surface and can become dull, but this does not affect the cutting properties of the knife.

Nesmuk | Material and Man

The knife manufactory relies on the best steel grades and noble handle materials in the selection and use of materials. Here you will find knife handles made of rare woods, handcrafted precious metals and noble plastics such as Juma and Micarta. The wooden handles are often made of handpicked pieces of exquisite quality and certified origin.

In their own forge, handcrafted Damascus steel is produced, which is further processed into blades with outstanding cutting properties. These knife blades are sharper than any machine-made knife, and each specimen is a unique piece. Markus Pattschull, the master blacksmith at Nesmuk, makes blades with particularly elaborate Damascus patterns - an art that only a few blacksmiths in the world master. Depending on the pattern, the number of steel layers ranges between seventy, several hundred or even several thousand layers.

Thanks to a specially developed technology, traditionally made Damascus blades can be provided with a transparent NPC coating (Nesmuk Protective Coating) and thus made corrosion-resistant. These knives combine the highest possible sharpness through the use of pure carbon steel with simultaneous rust resistance. This combination is unique worldwide and can only be found in Nesmuk knives.

The blades of the entry-level series are also made of a hard and at the same time very tough and resistant steel. Their cutting quality comes close to hand-forged carbon steel blades.

In addition to the high material quality, careful processing plays an important role. Therefore, trained goldsmiths and Damascus blacksmiths work hand in hand in the manufactory to create masterpieces of knife art through their skills and experience. About 50 work steps and an uncompromising demand for the highest quality are necessary to create knives that are far superior to models from modern, computer-controlled productions.

The knife forge also works with organizations such as the Fraunhofer Institute and the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research. This ensures that the high product quality at Nesmuk is preserved and continuously improved.

Nesmuk | Expertise and Collections

Nesmuk Soul

Extremely sharp and extremely durable: A fitting description for the Soul collection by Nesmuk. The blade steel contains proportions of the chemical element niobium. Niobium alloys have a very high stability, resistance and resilience. With conventional types of steel, the excellent cutting quality of the Soul blades could not be achieved. Nesmuk has therefore developed a special type of steel processing. This allows thin ground, lightweight blades of unparalleled sharpness with long durability to be produced. With niobium steel, optical changes can occur. The steel can tarnish or become spotty when it comes into contact with acidic or salty liquids over a longer period of time. This is not corrosion. You can easily prevent this by cleaning and drying the knife immediately after use. If you treat your knife as it deserves, no optical change will occur.

Nesmuk Janus

The characteristic feature of the Nesmuk Janus collection is the black blade. The color results from the carbon layer, which makes the blades resistant to acids and bases, and at the same time ensures low friction values and high scratch resistance. This coating, only a few micrometers thick, is the result of a special refinement, called "DLC technology" (Diamond-Like-Carbon). It optimizes the functional properties of the blade and makes Janus the knife series that withstands the highest demands.

Nesmuk Exclusive

Beautiful and unique - as a result of traditional forging techniques, the Nesmuk Exclusive series combines innovative technology with the highest utility value. These hand-forged blades made of up to 401 layers of Damascus steel provide excellent cutting performance: the faceted blade with single or double hollow grind minimizes food sticking. In addition, there is a technological innovation: thanks to their NPC coating (Nesmuk Protective Coating), the blades are permanently corrosion-resistant. Only the cutting edge is not coated. Like all knives, you should clean and dry your Nesmuk Exclusive knife immediately after use. Real fascination for form and function - that is the promise of the Nesmuk Exclusive collection.

Nesmuk | Question and Conclusion

The question that was asked at the beginning was: What is special about Nesmuk knives? It is, on the one hand, the quality: created from long-proven materials that combine the best cutting properties with durability. With blades that offer the highest level of sharpness and edge retention. With ergonomically shaped, solid handles that ensure fatigue-free work. With a timeless and beautiful design that will impress its user for a lifetime. Cutting tools that show respect for food, as they do not shred it, but cut it cleanly and effortlessly.

On the other hand, it is the magic that emanates from these knives. It is rooted in the ancient connection between humans and the tool of the knife. It reflects the passion of the blacksmith who works the steel until it seems perfect to him. It results from the time it takes to make such a knife.

You may think we're laying it on pretty thick... That's why we offer: Come to our store in Düsseldorf and try out a Nesmuk knife in the shop. Hold one of these knives in your hand, feel the balance, feel the smooth steel and the precious handle material, admire its perfection - experience the knife with all your senses...
