Peugeot Salt and Pepper Mills
»To prepare a good salad, you need four characters: a spendthrift for the oil, a miser for the vinegar, a wise man for the salt, a fool for the pepper.« François Coppée (1842 - 1908), French writer
Here at Butch, we would like to add something: » ... a wise man for the salt, a fool for the pepper, and the professional salt and pepper mills from Peugeot.«
The Peugeot Pepper Mill – the Original
It is the icon among pepper mills: The mill from Peugeot. The original was designed and built in France more than 160 years ago (!). Since then, the principle of the pepper mill has been constantly developed at Peugeot: Modern manufacturing technologies make it possible to continuously refine and improve functionality and technology. New materials and current designs are also added.
The core of each mill is the grinder. The steel is protected against corrosion by a special treatment. The cutting edges remain sharp for a long time, and the pepper grains are literally sliced, instead of being crushed like in cheap mills. The professional two-stage system cuts the pepper before it is ground. With this method, the intense character of the pepper aroma with all its fine nuances comes to the fore.
With the Classic models with a closure screw on the mill head, you can adjust the grinding degree continuously via this screw. The tighter the screw is tightened, the finer the grinding result. With the version with u‘Select system, you choose your desired grinding degree via the setting on the base of the mill: From I = very fine to IIIII = very coarse. The advantage of this patented system is that even when refilling, your favorite grinding degree remains set, or you can switch between different defined degrees.
The Peugeot Salt Mill – the Professional
Nearly no kitchen, no gastronomy can do without salt. Good salt qualities are often offered in coarse grain. For this reason, Peugeot has developed two different types of salt mills: mills for dry salt, and special mills for moist sea salt or Fleur de Sel.
Mills for dry salt:
A corrosion-resistant mechanism made of stainless steel grinds the dry salt to a degree of fine powder. This allows for precise dosing, and you can perceive the salt aroma of the seasoned dish particularly clearly.
With the salt mills – as with the pepper mills – there are two grinding variants: Once the models with a closure screw on the mill head. Here, the degree of grinding is continuously adjusted via the screw. Secondly, the version with u‘Select system. The desired degree of grinding is regulated in this version via the setting at the foot of the mill: From I = very fine to IIIII = very coarse. The advantage: Even when refilling, the selected degree of grinding remains set, and without trying and readjusting, you can switch between different gradations.
However, conventional salt mills must not be used for moist sea salt or Fleur de Sel! For this purpose, there are special mills, because the constant contact with moisture requires the use of a stainless steel grinding mechanism and a modified technique.
Mills for moist sea salt / Fleur de Sel:
The patented mechanism of the stainless steel ceramic grinding mechanism is designed in such a way that when grinding, the moist salt crystals are separated from each other in order to make crushing possible at all.
Peugeot wooden pepper mills
The first wooden pepper mill from Peugeot was a tribute to the company's location and the surrounding area. The brand is based in Quingey, in the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. In 1874, the founders wanted to pay homage to their forested homeland by designing a wooden pepper mill. The Z model impressed not only with its functionality, but also with its aesthetics.
The wood used today for Peugeot mills comes from PEFCTM-certified European forests. In the interest of environmental protection, chips and sawdust from production are collected and recycled. The paint used for the mills is naturally solvent-free.
Even today, each Peugeot wooden pepper mill is unique. Each one is a small one-of-a-kind piece, as no workpiece is exactly the same as another down to the smallest detail. The aesthetic appearance goes hand in hand with a pleasant, almost sensual haptic when it comes to the material wood: only polished wood feels so smooth, warm, and almost soft in the hands. Connoisseurs also love the sound of the peppercorns and the grinder in the wooden body. In our opinion, the natural material wood is a perfect match for the lively, spicy aromas of pepper.
The special collection Antique from Peugeot is completely in line with the vintage trend. Here, the company's pride in its long history of success is also expressed. Each mill gets a beautiful patina, like a valuable antique piece of furniture, through the special surface design. Pepper and salt mills made of wood from Peugeot are turned, painted, and assembled in France. You can get them in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors at Butch.
Peugeot Stainless Steel Pepper Mills
The roots of the Peugeot brand lie in steel processing. In 1810, brothers Jean Pierre and Jean Frédéric Peugeot converted the mill in Sous-Cratet, Doubs region, which they inherited from their ancestors, into a steel foundry. There, they produced strips and springs. Later, the collection of stainless steel pepper mills was created in reference to this long-standing connection with the material steel.
Another reason for the use of stainless steel lies in its material properties. Stainless steel, which is frequently used in professional kitchens, not only looks elegant and timeless, but is also resistant to corrosion (rust) and heat, insensitive to moisture, hygienic, and requires minimal maintenance. Peugeot pepper mills are coated with high-quality stainless steel. They are ideal for intensive use in professional kitchens. A true pleasure - in the kitchen or at the table.
Peugeot Acrylic Pepper Mills
Peugeot acrylic pepper mills are practical and beautiful. You can immediately see when it's time to refill the pepper corns. And acrylic also gives you a clear view of the type of pepper corns you are currently using in your mill. True pepper fans and frequent cooks buy two or three of these mills - for red Kampot pepper, white Sikara Madagascar pepper, or black Penja pepper.
Acrylic is an easy-to-care-for and fairly robust plastic, making it very suitable as a material for a pepper mill. However, its light transmittance can have disadvantages for the pepper contained therein. Therefore, we at Butch recommend keeping the filling level in the mill rather low. This way, the filled pepper is not exposed to the aroma killer light for too long.
All material descriptions of the pepper mills also apply essentially to the Peugeot salt mills, with one difference:
Peugeot salt mills made of acrylic
Unlike pepper, salt is insensitive to light. Acrylic and salt are therefore a perfect combination. Here in the Butch-Shop you will find the model Nancy described above in two variants: For dry salt, and for moist sea salt / Fleur de Sel.
